UDS Target Practice
Posted in Personal, UDS, Ubuntu, events on 11/13/2009 09:49 pm by Laura CzajkowskiIt’s a bit of an odd one really but, I’m from Ireland and have always wanted to fire a gun, don’t ask me why, I just do and there aren’t many places to do it here. Too many shoot out movies I suspect. I mentioned yesterday in the #ubuntu-women channel about this and then we started talking, how it’d be nice to do this while I’m in the USA for the week, Amber Graner (who rocks btw) went and looked up places and Dinda gave some useful information.
It was a pretty interesting discussion, which has resulted in Amber and I organising a evening event on Monday. It’s open to everyone to come along and it’s only a few minuets from the hotel. I’ve created a sign up sheet as we are limited to 25 people and it’s for two hours, all the information including the venue and prices which are pretty damn good are there also. It’s something different to do and should be some fun! Would be great to meet more people as well!

I applaud you’re efforts in empowering yourself and trying new things, but please choose a less offensive target to display than what looks like a man of African descent holding a weapon. You serve to perpetuate negative stereotypes and incite violence against people of color.

Sounds cool! i signed up, but just a warning, I’m in dallas right now and its really hard to get anywhere without someone driving a car, there are nightly shuttles but its not so great.

Funny, I was just at the gun store here in Albuquerque today. My wife’s new shotgun has arrived! How’s that for empowering women?
I’ve signed up. Although my Gaelic is crap, I’ve been mostly accepted by the Irish on several trips to the island, and have a lot of experience with firearms. If you want a shooting buddy to show you the ropes, be sure and let me know. Giorraionn beirt bothar.

@Laura And at the same time, don’t give in to everyone who pulls the race card. >.< People claim to be "offended" and Lemonsharkhu's claim that it "incites" violence is over-the-top idiocy for any reasonably sensible person.

Good for you! Welcome to America where it is still lawful to defend yourself and your loved ones! G-d forbid that you should ever be in a situation that you would have to do so… Besides, learning and practicing with firearms is a bunch of fun!
