7 New Features Karmic Koala

There seems to be a lot of coverage over here (Ireland) once again on the windows 7 launch and a large gaping hole of no other operating system being covered, or new features or events associated with these alternatives (no the new mac mouse does not count).  It’s rather frustrating to see technology journalists skim over the new features that are developed on other systems not just Ubuntu.

So with that I’ve noted 7 new features and wanted to know what you feel has improved in this release for you?

  1. Slicker user experience
  2. Gnome 2.28 featuring Empathy
  3. Ubuntu Software Center
  4. Instant Resume from suspend
  5. Ext 4 default
  6. Ubuntu one – cloud integration
  7. Faster start up times

So thank you to all those who made it possible!

  2. i am starting to think this no coverage is a world phenomena.
many of the sites simply, for a lack of a better word, publish windows 7.
where is the free media? is this true for other subjects?

    this reminds me of dr.who a bit…

  4. What do you *exactly* mean by
” Instant Resume from suspend “?
A link would be very appreciated!

  5. To me the improvements are:
    intel video driver fixed,
small fixes here and there (paper cuts)
    sligtly faster boot.

I don’t think there is much more:
empathy is not yet polished enough
ubuntu one is not going to help daily usage
ubuntu software center is too young

I would like ubuntu to focus on fixing bugs and improving applications. That is what wins users. We still need a better pdf viewer, a better video player, a better flash alternative, a faster gnome and a coherent theme from grub to the desktop.
Oh and a much better network-manager.

Try Kubuntu ;) We’ve got a great PDF viewer and a consistent theme.

Boot up time is a lot slower for me, on two different computers. In alpha6 it was faster, but since they added usplash before xplash it’s slow as ****!

  8. If it gives me a working dual-headed display on my workstation at work (damn you, and your awful X drivers, Nvidia), I’ll be happy.
