How do you name your machines

I was curious and tweeted how do people name their machines, is there logic behind or just random.  I tend to chose characters or themes in movies/shows. It started out with cypher being my login on skynet my computer society back in college.  I’ve had Enigma, Matrix, Bigbox, currently my toshiba is Cypher which is running Karmic, and Gorgamon which is the mini 9 running Hardy.

Some of the answers that came in were:  from Daniel darkstar and sunlight, JD chose his from Egyptian gods Isis on 8.10, sekhmet on 9.04 & baal as a win7 vm, and Mikkel chose his from List of Roman Emperors.

How do you do yours :)

    internet in-jokes (lappy486)
    boring (dev & pvr)
    fruity (banana)

No real pattern, just whatever takes my fancy at the time.
Or what I happen to be eating at the time.

  9. When I was dj’ing the main machine was called mute, the laptop was called noise and the pda was squeek to represent their relative musical abilities..

I set up an 8 machine server and workstation system for a school and it was Snow white and the 7 dwarfs

Now its a bit more mundane, the work machine is named by corporate, the media pc is media, and the home machine is called rayne for historic reasons.

I name my machines after Welsh placenames in Wales. The bigger and more powerful the machine the bigger the settlement’s name that I use. For example a netbook would be called Tonmawr as it is a tiny village with a tiny population whereas a laptop may be named after a town such as Castell Nedd since they often have some kick behind them but are not quite the most powerful machines going. Then of course powerful desktop systems are named after the cities such as Abertawe, Caerdydd or Bangor. I like watching people trying to pronounce the names of the systems as well which is an added bonus to using a method such as this ;-) !
