Software Freedom Day – Dublin

Ubuntu Ireland are holding Software Freedom Day in Dublin this September 20th, from 11am – 4:30pm in the Digital Hub. Registeration is now open, and so we can keep track of numbers, if you just leave a comment we’d appeciate it. There is no cost to come along, just come along and enjoy the day. We would hope if you have kids to bring them along. There will be some talks going on during the day, Irish Freedom Software Organisation, Google, and Camara will be giving short talks during the day. Ubuntu installs, and demos will also be taking place.  Timetable will be going online this week at will be on the Ubuntu site.

Ubuntu PotD – Dublin

Well according to the wiki (yes I still hate them) votes were cast and the 3rd Tuesday of the month has been set as the offical Ubuntu-ie meet up. It’s going to take place in the Longstone Pub.

Up until now Ubuntu have met with ILUG on the 1st Thursday of the month but they are now stepping out on their own to see if more Ubuntu folks want to come along on this day.

Dublin Girl Geek Dinner – August

Martha has organised a second Dinner again in Dublin. Taking place on Tuesday August 26th at Herbstreet Restaurant on Hanover Quay. To attend all you need to do is sign up on the site so Martha can keep track of the number. Blokes can come, as long as they are invited as a guest of a Girl Geek :) As to why you might want to come along.

It’s a chance to meet more like minded people. It’s very informal, and you get to meet some very interesting characters. It’s a great way to network and also a nice way to sample new places in Dublin. If you do want to come along and want an invite let me know, or if you want any more information just leave a comment.

Book Crossing

I stumbled upon this recenly while at the Longstone. It takes place on the 3rd Tuesday of the month (same night as the Ubuntu-ie PotD).

A very ‘novel’ idea, it’s the open source of books. People bring along their books and share them. Swapping their books for new ones. It’s called Book Crossing and is an international group. It gives you a chance to try a new authour you normall wouldn’t try, it doesn’t cost you anything and the next time you go back, you could pick up another novel.

All that they ask you to do is register online, tag it, and say where you are located and what you thought of it.  Some books have travelled to South America from Dublin, and vice versa.

I was well chuffed and looking forwad to going back again tomorrow night.
