Cariff here we come

Cariff here we come

So last January my carzy loo la mate TC rings me and says fancy going to Cardiff for the Heineken Cup Final in May. I say why the hell not, even if Munster aren’t in the final we’ll have a mad weekend.  Turns out Munster did indeed make the final and now there are about 20 people I know going to be at it :-) I cannot wait!

Leaving tomorrow morning on the ferry, hopefully weather won’t cock it up and cancel on us and we shall be over and checking into our hotel which we very smartly booked last January !(turns out being organised comes in well handy at times)

So photos and post event right up pending my survival of the weekend as the loo la herself has all of us dressed up for the match with what I can only describe as utter madness that is going to require copious amounts of the strong stuff to get me to wear!

Calling all women who work within the Open Source Community

Calling all women who work within the Open Source Community

Right I am hoping to organise a small working group to take part during the IOTC. Very informal and just a small get together. So far I’ve one speaker signed up to take part in the event, thanks to Noirin Shirley. But it does beg the question as to why there are not others taking part. Is it because there are not that many women in Open Source or they don’t want to present, take part or don’t know enough but want to learn more.

Many women took part at the GGD held by Martha in February and I know more of them found the same thing happening. When you are looking for someone to go to an event with you as let’s be honest not everyone likes to or wants to turn up to an event on their own, take part in speaking or just in discussion groups, you don’t know where to look.

What I have found is that there is even fewer women in the OS community and I would like to get a list of contacts or people that would attend a short discussion group who will hopefully be attending the IOTC. Also if anyone wants to present, please let me know!

or answer my question as to Why this happens………. lack of women in Open Source

Catch up, chat up and keep up

Catch up, chat up and keep up

That’s what I am at this weekend. Heading to Limerick to the SKynet awards. Should be fun to see some old mates there. Each year skynet runs a internal award system for best society person and best admin within the society for work done for Skynet. This in turn leads to an award night with some nibbles, drinks and this time some talks.

In 2006 Alan Cox came over, presented a talk and then Daniel Nagle and John Madden were presented with their awards for Best society person and best admin. Fun night was had with sitting outside Moll Darbys (flash site) till all hours and then onto Dolans. Oh and I won last year, we just didn’t get to go on the beer!

This year the following is the time table of the event.

Starts off at 2pm in the Students Union, Room 3 (Upstairs, beside the common room) Mel Gorman will be giving a talk on: “Maintaining
Performance of Software with a Basic Awareness of Hardware”.

After that (at 3:00pm) Christian van den Bosch (m1, composer of one of the Skynet Game clue’s) will be giving his talk on Retro cryptography.

Next (3:40pm) Sean Blanchfield (DemonWare) will be giving a talk on: A technical history of DemonWare.

4:30pm Quiz in the Students Union Common room.

6:00pm Award ceremony for Quiz winners, Society Person and Admin of the year.

6:30pm Then into Java’s (formerly the Scholars)
